The Process of Designing – Building a Vision
Step 01 : Understanding Client’s Vision
The journey with our client began way back during 2019, which is our client’s first house that engaged us for our service. After the success of turning their vision into reality a few years ago, they have decided to engage us for their 2nd home. Since their first project is mainly dominated with grey and dark wood colour, they have decided to go the total opposite for their new house, which is a beige dominated modern minimalist design. This is also the stage involving understanding the client’s new lifestyle and new preference.
Step 02 : Crafting Design Blueprint
With the client’s vision and preferences in mind, we transformed ideas into detailed blueprints. Every stage of the design process demands strong communication and collaboration between the designers, clients, and the team. We always begin the design process with site measurements, mood boards, and a furniture layout plan. This first step is crucial, as it sets the foundation for finalizing the overall concept. During this stage, we ensure that every detail—from the layout to the smallest design accents—is perfectly aligned. For this project, we opted for open, airy spaces with a neutral palette of whites, greys, beiges, and light wood tones, creating a harmonious and inviting atmosphere.
Step 03 : Material Selection and Procurement
Once we have finalized the overall design of the house, the next step waiting for us will be material selection. Choosing the right materials is crucial to achieve the serene aesthetic of Cloud Nine. We source matte finishes for seamless elegance, texture paint for depth and visual interest, and warm wood elements for balance. With the client’s children in mind, we prioritize materials that are safe and have a smooth finish. Not only that, we carefully sourced textiles that instantly evoked the essence of “Cloud Nine” the moment we saw them.
Step 04 : Overcoming Challenges
The biggest challenge we faced during this project was the strict time constraints and the tight handover schedule. Working within a condominium complex with an older building age often meant that many residents had already moved in. As a result, we were restricted to a limited working window—between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM—which added to the complexity of completing the project efficiently without compromising quality. Additionally, the homeowner needed to move in within three months due to personal reasons, which meant we had to begin work immediately. Typically, the process of designing and building a condominium project of this scale would require at least five months. However, thanks to our strong relationship with this client, built over more than five years, we embraced this challenge together as a team—committed to delivering on time without sacrificing excellence.
Step 05 : Installation and Detailing
The final phase of creating a modern minimalist interior design is to bring in all the elements together. Curated furniture and ensuring every lighting created the desired ambiance. Every piece of curated furniture is carefully placed to complement the overall aesthetic, ensuring balance and harmony throughout the space. Lighting plays a pivotal role in setting the desired ambiance. For the Cloud Nine project, we layered lighting to create depth and warmth. Soft, diffused lights were used to highlight key areas, while concealed LED strips added a subtle glow that emphasized architectural features. Each lighting fixture was selected not only for its function but also for its ability to blend effortlessly with the minimalist design. Accessories were kept minimal yet meaningful. Textures like plush throws, soft rugs, and delicate ceramics were added to enhance the cozy and serene atmosphere. The goal was to create a home that feels luxurious yet welcoming, where every detail contributes to the essence of modern minimalism.
The Final Reveal
On the day of the photoshoot, as we completed setting up the entire house, nature gifted us a magical moment. Heavy rain began to pour, and the house was enveloped by clouds, creating an ethereal atmosphere. The interior transformed into an almost otherworldly space, as if the house was floating in the sky. The scene was surreal, dreamy, and a perfect reflection of the design’s essence. This breathtaking moment was a true testament to the power of thoughtful design. Every element, from the serene neutral palette to the carefully curated materials, came together to create a space that not only looked beautiful but also resonated deeply with its surroundings. It was a moment that brought the vision of Cloud Nine to life, showcasing the harmony between architecture, interior design, and nature.
